We really lost too many greats in the span of a month. hooks really created a whole generation of writers and black feminists. Stunned.

She was 69. Barbara Christian was 56. June Jordan was 65. Audre Lorde 58. Like our elders dying way too young. Overworked especially in academia / publishing. Racist medical industry. I hope they’re all resting easy but where is our reprieve?

This is kinda related. One of my mentors who is an activist like I am told me something chilling that I have not forgotten. “I don’t want this work to kill me.” And I think of these black women and women of color who have been the back bones of activism and equality, and I think of that phrase, and it terrifies me.

And i’m not saying that this is what happened to the women above, but i’m saying there’s something gut wrenching about doing this work. the toll it takes, the stress it takes on top of everything else.

it hasn’t gone unnoticed that lots of these women, these people, were activist.
